ABSTRACT
This module represents a basic overview of the process of infiltration, and how it relates to other aspects of the water cycle. Both qualitative and quantitative relationships related to the mechanisms of infiltration are illustrated. The module also includes a description of graphical representations of infiltration and instruments used for infiltration measurements.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
- To be able to draw a control volume with input, output and state variables at point, plot and watershed scale for the process of infiltration
- To be able to describe the factors that determine fluxes across the control surface in relation to the infiltration processes
- To understand and apply available measurement techniques (for properties, fluxes, and states) and their limitations
- To model the infiltration process, understanding associated assumptions, simplifications, and limitations
- To understand the real-world importance of the infiltration
process
