ABSTRACT

The focus of the module is how to assess, quantify, and manage different pollution sources at the catchment scale, with a focus on diffuse sources and BMPs.

This module introduces the following concepts:

  1. Point versus diffuse sources: source apportionment
  2. Assessment strategies at the catchment scale: monitoring, indexes, and models
  3. Strategies to create and evaluate scenarios
  4. Best management practices (BMPs): different types and their efficiencies
  5. The total maximum daily load (TMDL) concept
  6. River basin management plans and special cases (intermittent rivers)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

  1. To understand how to assess pollution sources in a river basin.
  2. To be able to use management models at the catchment scale.
  3. To be able to select suitable management practices to meet water quality goals.
